What Truly is Plus Size?

What do you hear when someone says "plus size fashion?" I know some people think 'fat', 'ugly', and other stuff in that nature. Others might think 'bold', 'sexy', 'confident'. But what really is it? Well plus size clothing is designed for someone who is bigger than the average body size. What is the average body size?
According to an article on WebMD, "Today, the average American woman is 5’4″, has a waist size of 34-35 inches and weighs between 140-150 lbs, with a dress size of 12-14." In most stores, the average "plus size clothing" starts at about a 12-14. I find it funny that a lot of people shame women for being "plus size," when roughly 90% (my own statistic) of stores start their plus size clothing at the size that is supposed to be average for Americans today.
As a plus size woman, I take plus size sizing into a huge consideration. When I do shopping, depending at the store, I have to be very careful with what I am buying. For men and women who buy an extra small to a large, maybe even an extra large, they know they can walk into almost any store, and pick out their size, and it will fit. When you are plus size, you have to look at specific number size, like 18, 20, etc., versus XXL, XXXL, etc.
I have spent a lot of time figuring out what size I am at different plus size stores, and I have many stories to share about different sizing and events that I have learned from. I plan to tackle those in my articles, and help people figure out that just because you are plus size, doesn't mean you don't matter.
